Egg Freezing
This is the process of freezing eggs for later conception.
The single most important factor which determines the chance of you conceiving is age. Due to socio-economic reasons, women are waiting longer to have babies. The older a woman gets, the lower her chances of conceiving due to ovarian reserves being considerably lower. The incidents of miscarriages are higher due to genetic abnormalities in the ageing egg.
By freezing your eggs at a younger age, you are freezing the genetic potential of your eggs, therefore resulting in a higher positive outcome, which is pregnancy.
Other reasons for women to freeze eggs:
- If you are not in a committed relationship and ready to conceive by age 35
- Undergoing cancer treatment, known as oncofertility
- Socio-economic reasons, i.e career expectations
The process
The process begins with medication (injections) to achieve multiple oocytes (eggs). Approximately 3-4 consultations to measure follicle sizing will be required. Once the oocytes have measured the correct size a trigger shot will be administered and 48 hours later an egg retrieval will be performed.
The egg retrieval is done under conscious sedation. For the procedure, you will need to be admitted to HOPE Clinic.
The anaesthetist conducts the sedation and ensures that you have no pain.
The eggs are collected through the vagina using a guided ultrasound and ovum pick-up needle.
Once the procedure is concluded, you will be placed in recovery for monitoring. A meal and drink will be provided. When you are fully conscious you will be discharged.
A script will be supplied to you for antibiotics and pain medication.
The eggs are then frozen with cryopreservation and can be kept frozen for several years. When required they can be thawed and used for fertilization with your partner or donor’s sperm.
