Male Infertility
We analyse male fertility through a semen analysis which is done in our fertility laboratory at HOPE Clinic.
Any of the following can be the cause of a couple not falling pregnant due to the male factor:
- Sperm count – low or absent
- Sperm shape (morphology) – abnormal
- Sperm motility – abnormal or absent
- Varicocele – Enlargement of the veins within the scrotum that holds the testes
The causes of the above are explored and treated medically and or surgically.
We offer interventions that assist male infertility as follows
IUI is a process of growing 1 to 2 oocytes (eggs) using medication. Once the egg is the correct size (this is determined by vaginal ultrasound scans examining the ovaries) an injection (known as a trigger shot) is administered to cause the oocyte to be released into the fallopian tube. After a set time the partner will give us a sample of sperm – this will be washed in our laboratory and placed into the uterus through the vagina and cervix in a non-painful procedure which is similar to a papsmear. The whole procedure is conducted at HOPE Clinic with no need for admission or sedation as it is not painful.
A sperm is selected and individually injected into each oocyte (egg) and left overnight in the MIRI incubator. The next day the embryologist will examine the oocytes to make sure they have been fertilized. After 5 days, the embryologist will assess if we have created embryos.
This is done under local anesthesia and light sedation. The testis is aspirated to retrieve sperm that can be used to fertilize the eggs usually by ICSI.
A piece of testicular tissue is cut out under anesthesia for purposes of retrieving sperm or fertility preservation.
