Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
This is often used to assist couple who have infertility due to a male factor. The process begins with medication (small injections) to make multiple eggs grow.
The success to IVF has been shown to be better if more eggs grow. We will monitor the growth of the eggs using a vaginal ultrasound scan to examine the ovaries.
Once the eggs have grown to the desired size another injection is given to allow for final maturation of the eggs. After the recommended time the process of egg retrieval is carried out in our clean room operating room (OR).
The egg retrieval is done under sedation. For sedation, you will need to be admitted for a few hours into the clinic, the anesthetic doctor (conducts the sedation and ensures that you have no pain) will insert a drip to give you a sedative and pain medication.
The eggs are collected through the vagina using a needle (similar to taking blood from a vein in your arm), while visualizing the eggs using a vaginal ultrasound. Our OR at Hope Fertility is private, quiet and completely enclosed. There is no cutting or stitching involved.

After the egg retrieval you will be monitored in the recovery and given something to eat and drink. At that time, your partner will give us a sample of his sperm. At Hope fertility we have a private, quite room that has been appropriately prepared and is always kept clean for the sperm collection. This will not be necessary if you are using donor sperm
With ICSI each sperm is individually injected into each egg and left overnight in the MIRI incubator. The next day we will examine the eggs to make sure they have fertilized and we will call you to let you know how the eggs have done
The eggs that have fertilized are allowed to grown in the incubator for 3 to 5 days.
At this point we can:
- Freeze all the embryos for later use.
- Test the genetics of the embryo.
- Transfer the embryo into your uterus (womb).
