Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

PMOS consists of a broad spectrum of symptoms and is very common.

It is diagnosed when at least two of the following features are present:

  • Polycystic ovaries on sonar (enlarged ovaries with multiple cysts)
  • Menstrual problems (absent or reduced periods)
  • Hyperandrogen state (clinical or blood tests)

Often patients with PMOS present with subfertility mainly from anovulation and need ovulation induction treatment to conceive.

Process of Ovulation Induction:

  • A vaginal ultrasound is performed
  • Medication is then prescribed which could be in tablet form or injectables for a few days
  • You will be required to see your reproductive medicine specialist to confirm that the follicles are growing with the medication.

Once the egg has grown to the correct size an injection is given to cause ovulation, known as a trigger shot. After this, depending on the results of the sperm, one would have intercourse (known as a natural cycle) or perform intrauterine insemination (IUI). This is performed at HOPE Clinic.
